Synopsis

Magic Island explores the origins of Uluwatu, Bali. A remote fishing village on the island’s southern shore, believed to be cursed by its original inhabitants, Uluwatu is now one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world. Told through the voices of twelve influential figures from across Bali, the film examines the sustainability of the island’s rapid development and the growing tension between cultural preservation and modern expansion. At its heart, Magic Island is a love letter to Uluwatu, a sacred place at the edge of the earth, where the future of Bali’s culture, people, and spirit hangs in the balance.

Director's Statement

I’ve spent my whole life in Uluwatu every first experience, good and bad, has happened here. I’ve watched the village I grew up in transform into one of the world’s most popular tourist destinations. This film was born from a deep need to share something I feel must be seen.

For those who truly love this place, I want to remind you that Uluwatu is still beautiful, and its magic will never fade. And for those experiencing it for the first time, I want to show you how rare and precious it once was so you’ll understand why it must be protected.

This film is my love letter to Uluwatu. The rock at the end of the earth.
